Street vs. Avenue
Eunmi: Karen, I had trouble to get to a new library last week.
Karen: What happened, Eunmi?
Eunmi: I used my GPS device but it directed me a completely wrong place.
Karen: Oh dear! It’s not a new story. Why don’t you use your map, too?
Eunmi: How does the American house numbering system work?
Karen: The house numbering system is basically a grid system.
For example if your address is 15312 NE 8th street, then the first 3 numbers of the address tell you that your address intersects with 153rd avenue.
So the grid of 153rd avenue and NE 8th street is the block you live on and the last 2 digits are your house number which is 12.
Usually the streets run east-west and the avenues run north -south.
Eunmi: It sounds like a piece of cake to find any house in the city.
Karen: One more thing, house numbers are even on the south and east sides and odd for houses on the north and west sides of the road.
Eunmi: Thank you very much for your explanation, Karen.
