Eunmi: Did you watch the movie “Silver Lining Playbook”?

Debbi: Yes, it’s a very good movie. It received eight Academy Award nominations.

Eunmi: Oh, really? Tell me about the movie.

Debbi: The main character, Pat loses everything, and moves back in with his parents. He meets Tiffany who is a recently-widowed sex addict, she is a tough cookie. You should see it.

Eunmi: What‘s the meaning of “Silver lining”?

Debbi: That’s from the idiom, ‘Every cloud has a silver lining.’

That means even though there are dark clouds; the sun is shining at the edges of every dark cloud. It reminds us that every difficult situation has a bright side. Thus, we can overcome difficulties.

Eunmi: Thank you. I’ll go to the library to check out that movie.

은미: ‘실버 라이닝 플레이북’이란 영화 봤어요?

데비: 봤지. 아주 잘 만든 영화야. 아카데미상 8개 부문 후보에 올랐었어.

은미: 정말? 영화에 대해 말해 봐.

데비: 팻이란 남자가 모든 것을 다 잃고, 자기 부모님집에 얹혀 살게 돼. 팻은 티파니란 성중독에다 남편을 잃은 여자를 만나. 그 여자는 아주 까다롭지. 네가 영화를 봐야 해.

은미: 근데, ‘실버 라이닝’이 무슨 말이야?

데비: ‘모든 구름에는 은빛라이닝(lining은 원래 양복의 안감)이 있다.’라는 속담에서 온 말이야. 검은 구름이 쫙 끼어도 햇빛이 구름속에는 비추잖아. 이 말은 아무리 상황이 어려워도 밝은 면이 있으므로 그것을 극복할 수 있다는 것을 생각나게 하지.

은미: 고마워. 그 영화 빌리러 도서관에 가야겠다.

표현 뽀개기: 쩌~억! 잘 익었네.

Tough cookie: a person who is difficult to deal with. 상대하기 까다로운 사람

Co-worker: Some tough cookie has demanded to see the manager.
