<Lessons
Learned From the Annual Chasedae Conference>
Korean American leaders from 17 states and
Canada gathered for less than 72 hours to network and to discuss unification
with the conference theme of “Realizing Unification through Trust and
Cooperation”.
As a faculty, we
participate and present at a few conferences a year so I am very comfortable
with conferences and hold reasonable conference expectations. However, this is
the first conference I attended with only Korean and/or Korean Americans.
Although the conference host, Washington D.C. Chapter, sent the participants
numerous emails to prepare us for the conference, I wasn’t really clear about
the goals of the conference.
However, from the minute I arrived at the
Dulles Airport at 6 in the morning, I knew that this was different from the
typical conference I’ve attended.
As a Korean American, there was an immediate
connection through “Jung”. The host sent a driver to pick us up. It turned out that the driver was an
executive of a company, and was volunteering his time because his friend, a
NUAC member, asked him.
This kind of hospitality and what you do for a friend
is unheard of in American culture. Jung is the only explanation.
From the welcoming dinner, we heard from
amazing speakers of Korean descent or from leaders who were passionate about
Korea, Korean people, and the issue of unification.
Aside from the speakers, as
we began to network, I realized that I was sitting amongst leaders the in our
communities.
Most were professional Korean Americans, serving the needs of our
communities through service and professional careers. Often times in the media,
we only hear of young Korean Americans who are encouraged to become doctors and
lawyers for the financial success.
Yes, there were lawyers in the room, but the
colleagues sitting in the conference broke down the stereotypes of typical
lawyers through their stories of how they aim to empower Korean Americans
and/or Korean Canadians and the community.
Korean professional in multiple
fields were increasing the visibility of our homeland and the issue of
unification through their presence in the communities as leaders. Just like the
Hallyue movement, we were indeed impacting issues around unification through
increased awareness and service in the dominant community.
From my observation, Chasedae, are
embracing the best parts of both worlds. We are capable of embracing the idea
of unity, tightly uniting for a cause such as the unification. We are also
independent thinkers and welcome different opinions presented during debated
issues.
We are not afraid of what others think, chaemyeon, and are strong
enough to challenge ideas. This was clear in the facilitated discussions.
Unlike the stereotypical images of “quiet Asians”, we ask questions and are
able to articulately present on various issues.
There was never a quiet moment
when questions were solicited, and we always ran out of time during
presentations. There were no fillers and all questions triggered deeper
thinking. These are the images of Korean I want the educators to see.
Being a
member of both worlds also mean being bilingual and bicultural. I was shocked
how well the members were able to code switch and stay bilingual throughout the
conference.
Yes, the challenge of having only Korean or English speakers did come
up multiple times. However, the group members were strong enough to effectively
digest the information through facilitation and/or collaboration in two
languages.
If the speaker presented in Korean, translated English versions were
available on the screen and vise versa. Chasedae also knows how to have fun
late into the night, but are ready in the morning with powerpoint
presentations. They have the hard work ethic while staying well-rounded,
balancing fun and work.
These are the impressions of Chasedae I am
leaving with. We demonstrate “jung” that can be felt only among the Korean
people. We embrace bilingual and biculturalism and use them as assets but
don't’ let ideas, such as chaemyon, get in the way of trust and collaboration.
We hold onto the work ethics of our immigrant parents but also understand the
balance of work and play. We are the future of Korea, and with a group of
dynamic leaders in North America, I am certain that unification will be “Made
in Korea” as our winning essay winner declared through her powerful and moving
speech.
