시애틀 통합한국학교가 워싱턴주 한국학교로는 처음으로 킹 카운티 정부로부터 그랜트를 받아냈다.

이 학교 줄리 강 교장은 16일 보낸 보도자료를 통해 “시애틀 통합한국학교를 학생으로 다니고 있거나 보조교사로 봉사하고 있는 쇼어라인 쇼우드고교 한인 학생들을 대상으로 하는 ‘용기있는 지도자 프로그램(CLP)’운영비로 액수는 몇백불에 불과하지 않지만 킹 카운티로부터 그랜트를 받았다”고 밝혔다.

이 그랜트는 교육학 박사로 현재 워싱턴대학(UW)에서 교사들을 가르치고 있는 이중언어와 다문화 등의 전문가인 강 교장이 지난달부터 매주 금요일 오후 2시30분 쇼우드고교에서 한인 학생들을 대상으로 실시해온 CLP 프로그램에 사용된다.

강 교장은 이 프로그램을 통해 학생들에게 ▲긍정적으로 생각하고(Be Positive) ▲만족하며(Be Present) ▲통찰력을 가지며(Be Perceptive) ▲목적의식을 갖고(Be Purposeful) ▲흠이 없도록 하며(Be Perfected) ▲주도적으로 행동하고(Be Proactive) ▲열정을 가질 것(Be Passionate) 등 이른바 ‘7P’를 가르쳤다.

강 교장은 “쇼어라인 교육구 고교생을 대상으로 설문조사를 한 결과, 32%의 학생들이 우울증세를 경험했으며, 19% 학생들은 자살을 고려했을 정도인데 한인 학생들은 이보다 더 스트레스 등이 심하다”고 말했다.

그녀는 “미국 아이들은 자신의 감정을 어른들에게 솔직하고 표현하고 부모들도 이를 받아들이는 분위기가 형성돼 있는데 한인 가정은 그렇지 못하다”며 “이번 프로그램을 통해 자신의 감정을 어른들에게 솔직하고 풀어놓고 해결해가는 법 등을 전했다”고 말했다.

강 교장은 또한 “미국에서는 사소한 문제가 있거나 설사 문제가 없더라도 카운셀링을 받는 것이 일반화돼 있는데 한인들은 상담을 받을 경우 이상하게 보는 경향도 있는데 이도 고쳐야 할 부분”이라고 덧붙였다.

CLP 프로그램을 받은 학생들은 이번 주말인 18일과 19일 시애틀 통합한국학교 금요반과 토요반에서 자신이 교육받은 내용을 친구와 후배들과 나누는 ‘프리젠테이션’을 실시한다.

United Seattle Korean School received a grant from the King County

 This is the National Prevention Week. 

In an effort to make a difference and commit to a healthy lifestyle, United Seattle Korean School has applied and received a grant from the King County to implement the Courageous Leadership Program (CLP) with the students at Shorewood High School. Every Friday, the CLP youth leaders met after school for four weeks to learn about  the seven principles of inspiration for the courages leaders (Be Positive, Be Present, Be Perceptive, Be Purposeful, Be Perfected, Be Proactive, Be Passionate).  

Through the program, Principal Kang encourages youth leaders to address social/emotional health issues. After studying the data from the Healthy Youth Survey and acknowledging that as high as 32% of high school students reported experiencing depressive feelings and that as high as 19% of high school students contemplated suicide, the CLP youth leaders came up with a plan to increase awareness of social/emotional health and to create healthier community. 

As a final product, the CLP youth leaders will present their projects at United Seattle Korean School on May 18&19th to inform young children to stay positive, help them to label their emotions, and to validate emotions, especially depression. 

With CLP's spoken and written voices, our goal is to raise awareness of health issues in our community and to provide strategies to overcome challenging time through the science of the positives. 

Principal Kang would like to continue to seek state and other funding/grant opportunities to support programs for youth. She is interested in nurturing and developing youth leaders. Grant writing also make USBKS more visible in the community. Even if we don't receive the funding, more of the dominant community members become more aware of our school and recognizes the wonderful services we provide for our students.
